Newsgroup subject: workaround for text field advanced find for greater than and less

Does anyone have a good suggestion for working around the limitation of Advanced Finds that will not do a Greater than and Less than of a text field?
We created a field to track a person's birth day, month and year as a varchar. If we went with int, the field will be formatted with a comma, which just looks bad on years. We took this approach so it would be easier to find all July birthdates.
Now we need a list of everyone between 25 and 50. Are we forced to use a 25 row advanced find, grouped with or?
