There are a bunch of settings that would reproduce what you are seeing. Generally Windows Home default settings favor most home users (e.g. run games) and Windows Pro favor business users (e.g. connect applications to database servers). The different settings have been covered in this newsgroup over the years, so searching earlier posts may help.

In these situations I favor taking BCM out of the picture and trying to connect your client machine to the server database directly using sql software like Management Studio or sqlcmd.exe. BCM's database connection UI makes it easier for BCM users when everything's aligned, but Sql's tools will have better diagnostics when things don't work.

Have Business Contact Manager on 3 machines. Sharing database from BCM on XP media center machine. 2nd machine (XP home) can connect but 3rd (Vista home) machine can't. Help says that you can't share from a Vista Home machine or an XP home machine. Since the XP home machine can connect, I thought the Vista home probably would too. Have the dbase shared with the right names and passwords as far as I can tell but get this message when I try to connect. "Cannot find any Business Contact Manager databases on computer (name). For more information about possible causes, click Help. I've tried to connect with all firewalls off and disabled virus programs but no luck. Is the Vista Home machine looking in the right place? There's no option to browse to the file location when connecting... Is there another way?

Any ideas?

Thanks

I have a domain and a pc setup with BCM. Shared the database. So far users that are members of the domain have had no problem getting to the database. I have one user that has Windows XP Media on a laptop. He is part of the workgroup. He can log into exchange and sync up with Outlook. He is in AD as a user and he is added to the database share as a user. When I try and connect him to the pc it gives me an error about the password not being set properly. I can browse the network and select the bcmadmin pc. When I do it asks for a login. After I do that and then try and select the computer from BCM it says that the user is not a valid shared user.

Is this because the pc is not a member of the domain or something else?

Thanks.

Yes / no. We have never tested BCM 2007 with SQL Server 2008. It probably should work as Luther has stated, but I cannot make any guarantee to you that your daily operations will not get interrupted.

Before doing anything, please backup or export all of your data to be safe.
Tweaks / security and permission changes are almost certainly a requirement on your side if you decide to make the move.

Technically it should work - BCM tends to use simple SQL which doesn't change between sql releases.

However, Sql keeps uping the security, so you may need to tweak the database's security settings after upgrading.

We are using a SQL Enterprise 2005 shared database with 4 users. Each user has SQL 2005 Express installed (the version that installs with BCM). We would like to upgrade the shared database to SQL 2008. Is this supported?
Do the users need to update to 2008 Express or can they continue to use 2005?
Thanks

There isn't an online service to do that, today. With all the noise Microsoft has been making about services in the cloud I expect BCM'll provide an online sync service in the future.
What has worked for some user is putting the BCM database on a server, connecting the server to the internet, and then running VPN software to connect remote PCs to the BCM database.

Hello,
Can someone guide me as to how I would setup Business Contact Manager for an employee to work from home? I need to be able to share the database with my boss. We both will be working from our home.
Would we need to setup a server or is there an online feature that will allow this?
Any information would be helpful. Thank you in advance!
