I have a client who is just starting out with BCM 2007 and of course there are 1,000,001 questions I'm being asked. The major one being can the records that a user can view be restricted to a specific set (ie by Territory's), so that for instance Salesman 'A' can only see the contacts assigned to Territory 'A'.

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Hi julesline,
Unfortunately, in your case, you will have to manually copy the values over from the Account form to the Opportunity form for the customized fields.

BCM was not designed to share the actual values between different forms, so the only workaround for you would be to copy them manually.
As for the Reports, if you click on "Modify Report" button, you would see that under Columns, there is a "Custom Columns" item. This item would only appear if there is customization field on the form that the report is based on. When you click on the "+" mark, you should be able to see checkboxes for your customize fields.

Hope that helps,

Hello,
I've been working with the software for 2 weeks. I'm trying to customize it to our business which is a professional advisory service. I added user-defined fields to the accounts, wasn't sure I wanted them there, so I then added the same fields to the Opportunity section. Although the same fields are now showing in the General Forms of both the Accounts and Opportunity sections, the data didn't transfer. Is there a way to bring the data over with the fields? Then when creating reports I don't see these user-fields I created as options. Did I do something wrong?

Some of the text in your log is not in English, which may be an indication.

When BCM connects to a database, it checks a few things about that database, like the version number and locale. BCM will only connect to databases that are the same version and locale as BCM. If you install French BCM on one machine and German BCM on another, and share the database on one the machine, BCM on the other machine won't "see" the database because the locales don't match. That would explain why
sqlcmd can connect to the database, but the database does not show up in BCM. You can SELECT * FROM OrgTable to get the locale of a database.

Hi Lynn,

What kind of goal are you trying to achieve with this "backward compatible" ability that you are asking?

If you want Business Contact Manager 2007 to be able to pick up BCM 2003 database so you can make the most out of the 2007 functionality, then yes, you can do this smoothly as of today. (from 2007) Business Contact Manager menu > Database Tools > Create or select a database...

If you want BCM 2007 to pick up BCM 2003 data, you can export data from 2003 and import that to 2007. (from 2007) Business Contact Manager menu > Database Tools > Import and Export...

If you want a BCM 2003 client to connect to a shared BCM 2007 database, then I would say sorry -- you would need to get both (or all) clients up to the same version (2007) for them to run together.

If you are referring to something else, please do let me know. I will answer you to the best of what I can.

Hope that helps,

Sharing a calendar usually requires both users using the same Exchange server, although there may be other solutions using a web service out there.

There isn't anything today to synchronize BCM through a web service. Some people put the BCM database on a company server, and then login to the company network remotely through VPN that allows their PC to connect to the BCM database server.

If those aren't an option, you could try exporting everything that has changed since the last sync data from one PC, and importing (with the merge) option on the other PC, and then doing the reverse. It's manual work, but it works in many cases.
