Hi! We started using BCM as a separate entity on each computer. Now we have a shared database on our server that all can access through the "online" function. However, in attaching to this database, we have lost all of our previous data since it creates a new "offline" database that doesn't have our old data in it.
How do we merge the two "offline" databases on each client computer and also cause the merged DB to update the server database?
Thanks for your help!

I have a domain and a pc setup with BCM. Shared the database. So far users that are members of the domain have had no problem getting to the database. I have one user that has Windows XP Media on a laptop. He is part of the workgroup. He can log into exchange and sync up with Outlook. He is in AD as a user and he is added to the database share as a user. When I try and connect him to the pc it gives me an error about the password not being set properly. I can browse the network and select the bcmadmin pc. When I do it asks for a login. After I do that and then try and select the computer from BCM it says that the user is not a valid shared user.

Is this because the pc is not a member of the domain or something else?

Thanks.

Hi,

I have been working with Outlook 2007 with Business Contact Manager for about 6 months. I moved from ACT!, and I'm still trying to get used to the differences.

I am experiencing a problem with searches. If I type a name into the search box, I often receive a message that no contacts can be found. I know the contact is in the database. If I switch views (for example, from "Business Cards" to "Address Cards"), the contact(s) is shown.

(I wonder if this is similar to a problem I have in Outlook Mail where some email messages don't show up in the inbox until I switch to another folder (for example, from "Inbox" to "Outbox", and then back to "Inbox").)

Thanks for any information that can be shared.

I would like to see an indexed, key field for project numbers in the main group. Just trying to move from Goldmine to BCM. I realize I can create a user field for this. But it won't get the same treatment as a key field. I have been managing projects for a very long time. AEC design construction field. Project number plus project name is the only way to identify unique projects. Any idea how many George Washington High Schools there are in the US? How many projects did I do there, in What year. Project number solves a lot of issues. Thank for listening.

Hi,
1, 2, 3, 5 (if you're referring to crm reports) and 6 are in BCM too, more or less in the way you mentioned them. First of all you need to decide if you want an on premise solution, like BCM is meaning it's installed on your computer, or if you should go for a hosted one, aka Salesforce. BCM is cheaper and works pretty much ok for small businesses (they have the Dynamics suite for larger companies), but it's not easy to customize for specific needs (I'm talking about plugins for instance, like Salesforce provides the 3rd party plugins).

Anyway, the best advice I can give you is to trial a couple of them. On one hand you can test Outlook with BCM, ACT! (does somehow what you want) or Maximizer, on the other hand the hosted solutions (that can get expensive) like SugarCRM, Salesforce or ZOHO.

I work at a software development company and one of our clients wants us to help them find the "best" CRM solution for them. BCM is on the list, but to be honest I don't have much experience with these systems. These are the requests that were given by the client:

1. Centralized…..easy access to History of communications by Contact (and or company)

2. Assignment of a Category to each contact for easy sort by purpose of that contact. I.e. Customer / prospect / supplier etc.

3. Automatic Linking of Communications and Attachment files to that contact or group of contacts that work for that company.

4. Linking Qbks areas of

a. Open Orders
- Shipped Orders Year to date
- Shipped orders last year
- Accounts Receivable pending payment
- Problems / Credits pending

5. Custom Template in OL for a “Line Up Sheet” (what articles and prices the customer pays.)

6. Sharing all the above across the Net Work internally and by OWA or VPN or Remote users.

We are working on a custom solution for number 4 to link Outlook to quick books and I think that BCM could handle some of the rest. What concerns me is reading about questionable performance over VPN. This will be a pretty big option that could be a deal breaker if it doesn't work well.

Does anyone have any suggestions/ideas about if BCM is the best thing to use here? I've been looking at some different options, but I haven't had enough time to really get too deep into it. I thought I'd see if anyone else here had run into similar situations.

Thanks.

If you have BCM 2003, make sure you've updated it up to Service Pack 3. I recall that there were errors with calculated fields like this that were fixed.

I forwarded your message to senior developers in my team, and one of them quickly got back, suspecting that a mild "form/property corruption" might be going on. Did you just recently install other Outlook Add-ins, or were you trying to modify form customization? If you did, resetting your form cache might just work here.

Follow these steps to reset your form cache (don't worry, it won't hurt you):
1. In Outlook, go to Tools menu > Options.
2. Choose "Other" tab, then "Advanced Options..."
3. Click "Custom Forms..."
4. Click "Manage Forms..."
5. Click the "Clear Cache" button, restart Outlook and try again.

(I don't have Outlook 2003 right now, so I wrote this based on Outlook 2007; I would not expect them to be too much different between 2003 and 2007, though. If the layout is different and my instruction does not match with what you see, please look around... all should be near-by.)

Please try this and let me know if it works for you. If not, we can try to get log file from you and see if we can find the error.

I am not sure... "properties which are computed" sounds like the "File As" field to me. Are you trying to set the "File As" field with any specific way? Can you create any simple contact such as "Joe Brown" and see if the "File As" field can be saved as "Brown, Joe"?

I have not seen this before.. might need to test around to find the issue.
